MY STORY

I’m Gaawut; a martial artist, researcher of ancient martial arts, and Muay Boran enthusiast and innovator. I want to help you become a skilled and confident warrior by sharing my modern-traditional hybrid Muay Boran Style; Muay Nam.

I discovered Muay Boran eight years ago by watching a Tony Jaa demo. I was amazed by the beauty and power of his movements. I joined a gym that taught IMBA Muay Boran, a blend of the main Muay Boran styles created by Grand Master Marco De Cesaris.

With time, I matured as a fighter, and I realized that Muay Boran had some limitations and misconceptions that were holding back its true potential.
It wasn't just a problem with my gym, Muay Boran was trapped in a mix of routine, ideas, and tradition that hindered growth, and it was lagging behind the evolution of modern fighting and sports science.

So I left the academy and started my personal journey to actualize the true potential of Muay Boran. I understood three key concepts;

1. If combining multiple Muay Boran styles, I could engineer one that perfectly suited my preferences and needs. Furthermore, I could reconstruct the partially lost areas like Thai Bare-Knuckle Boxing, and Thai Wrestling.

2. Ancient Martial Arts that looked for maximum effectiveness and practicality are incredibly similar even if they come from different sides of the world, because the human body is the same, and so are the ways to efficiently fight it. If combining Muay Boran with other ancient martial arts like Old British Bare-Knuckle Boxing, Abrazare, and Aikijujutsu, they would synergize into a more powerful single unit, and I could cover the weak areas of the art while reinforcing the ones already great.

3. By studying the evolution of modern fighting through combat sports, and the latest sports science discoveries, I could apply them to Muay Boran to get an up-to-date martial art with the latest combat strategies and training methods. I could get the most out of training in the shortest possible time, reinforcing the body and mind to reach peak physical and mental shape.

Keeping these three key concepts in mind, I founded my hybrid Muay Boran style called
Muay Nam, which means “Boxing of Water” in Thai, It’s a tribute to Bruce Lee’s famous quote “Be Water My Friend” and underlines the adaptability of the style.
After years of training, study, trial, and error, I reached a stable core for the art, that makes it utilizable for fighting in extreme competition or self-defense.

Muay Nam is a mix of the following Muay Boran styles;
IMBA Muay Boran, Muay Korat, Muay Chaiya, Muay Lopburi, Muay Thasao, Muay Phraya Pichai, Muay Thalengphol, Muay Chaisawat, Muay Nawarach, Muay Lertrit, Thaiyuth, Muay Phra Chao Seua, and the Muay from the most ancient manuscript ever found.

Its repertoire is made of around 40% Muay Boran and Muay Thai, 40% ancient European martial arts and Croydon Boxing System, 8% Aikijujutsu, 2% Jeet Kune Do, and 10% other modern and ancient martial arts.

It is not a definitive and crystallized style, it is always being updated and transforming.

My mission is to share with you what I’ve learned and what I’m still learning, so that you can achieve your goals faster and easier, without the limitations and complications of outdated methods. Whether you want to be a better fighter in the ring or cage or to be able to defend yourself in any situation, you will benefit from my work.

Join the Muay Nam community and become the warrior you always dreamed to be!

FAQ 1: What's that mask that you wear? It's a mask inspired by the one used in Thai Khon Teather, which is profoundly linked with Muay Boran.

FAQ 2: Are you a qualified master? Since I left my Muay Boran Academy to start my personal journey I didn't get a qualification. Despite being able to get it, I'm not interested in doing it; the martial art masters of the past didn't have qualifications, they demonstrated their expertise through practice; try out what I teach and you will discover the effectiveness. Quoting "The Karate Kid": "In Okinawa, belt mean no need rope to hold up pants." Beside, since Muay Nam is my personal way of fighting, who's going to approve what works best for me besides me? I'm more busy training, improving my art, and helping my students than having to take exams, to demonstrate what? Maybe in the future I will get one for fun, but right now, I make the value I offer speak for myself.

FAQ 3: Is Muay Nam a purely Thai Martial Art? Definitely not, while my roots come from Muay Boran and I still adopt the Thai nomenclature, Muay Nam is a hybrid martial art, with influences from martial arts all over the world, such as Jeet Kune Do, Catch Wrestling, Abrazare, Old British Bare-Knuckle Boxing, Crodyon Boxing System, Aikijujutsu, Wushu, Lethwei, and more. It is an international martial art, that's why you will find elements not present in Thai Boxing lines.

FAQ 4: Can I use Muay Nam for self-defense? Muay Nam gives you the capability to use your body as a weapon, and due to the way I developed it, it can transition flawlessly to self-defense. However, self-defense is something very serious and you need specific training protocols for it; besides learning Muay Nam you need to find a good self-defense school to train at, facing drills, simulations, learning de-escalation strategies, awareness, and fortifying the mind.
